Dalmatian cuisine

Fresh fish, peka, prosciutto, homemade olive oil and Plavac Mali and Pošip wines.

Fresh seafood & fish

As a fishing village, Živogošće offers a fresh catch every day: grilled fish, octopus, calamari and shellfish. Don't miss peka – meat or octopus slow-cooked under an iron bell with potatoes and vegetables. Many konobas also serve fish stew and seafood risotto with local olive oil and herbs.

We recommend the fresh fish platter at a local konoba or seaside restaurant – the best of the daily catch, prepared the traditional Dalmatian way.

Meat & traditional dishes

  • Dalmatian prosciutto (pršut) and sheep or goat cheese as starters.
  • Lamb, veal or chicken "ispod peke" or grilled over an open fire.
  • Local stews – hearty but still Mediterranean-light.

Bread, olive oil & simplicity

Every meal comes with homemade bread and extra virgin olive oil, often from local family groves. Simplicity is key: grilled vegetables, fresh herbs, lemon and olive oil.

Wine & drinks

  • Plavac Mali – a strong, full-bodied red, often from Pelješac.
  • Pošip – a fresh white from Korčula.
  • Grk and Debit – lighter whites.
  • Local rakija, especially herbal or fig, is often served as a welcome drink.

Sweets

Traditional cakes with almonds, figs and honey, fritule (mini doughnuts) and rožata (Dalmatian crème caramel), plus seasonal fruit – figs, grapes, cherries, pomegranates and mandarins.
